The reference point for the history and traditions of the Muggio Valley is the MEVM (Ethnographic Museum of the Muggio Valley) in Cabbio. The MEVM information centre is at Casa Cantoni, while the museum extends along various itineraries in the valley, linking the main elements of cultural heritage in the area: you will find villages, historical sites and panoramic viewpoints immersed in nature. The MEVM is aware of this heritage and is committed to promoting and preserving it.The Muggio Valley landscape, recognised as “Landscape of the Year 2014”, stands out for its rich variety thanks to two main factors. On the one hand, the action of the natural elements, such as the rocky substrate, vegetation and climate; on the other, human intervention that has modified the territory to create stable settlements. Over time, this combination has created one of Switzerland’s most distinctive alpine valleys. The valley also preserves numerous vestiges of rural tradition and offers a number of unique features not only from a historical standpoint, but also from an artistic, ethnographic and naturalistic one. You will find nevère (ice pits) used to store milk before processing, roccoli (bird-catching towers), bolle (ponds), fountains, cisterns, bridges, charcoal pits, mills and chestnut woods.

Moreover, Casima is within easy reach of numerous cultural sites in the Mendrisiotto region.

  • Mendrisio Museum of Art: located in the magnificent town of Mendrisio, it has staged exhibitions dedicated to the great masters of the 20th century for more than 20 years.
  • Züst Gallery: an important and historic art gallery in the Mendrisiotto region, in Rancate.
  • Monte San Giorgio Fossil Museum: fossils from Monte San Giorgio can be seen in Meride, in this museum extended by architect Mario Botta.
  • Vincenzo Vela Museum: in Ligornetto, with world-famous sculptures.
  • M.a.x. Museum: located in the town of Chiasso, the building is dedicated to promoting the knowledge of graphics, design, photography and contemporary visual communication.

Our team will be happy to advise you on the best activities to do in the Mendrisiotto area, in Ticino and beyond, for an even better holiday experience.
